Hey there! Rohan yahan. Welcome back to Learn Marketing in 100 Days.

Day 8: Customer Value — Why People Buy mein humne samjha tha ki log kisi product ko sirf uske features ke liye nahi, balki usse milne vaali value ke liye khareedte hain.

Teeno situation mein basic problem same hai — pyaas (thirst). Lekin customer ka behaviour aur spend bilkul alag hai. Yahan par marketing ka sabse fundamental concept kaam karta hai: Needs, Wants, aur Demands ka difference.

What You Will Learn Today

  • Need, Want aur Demand ke beech ka exact marketing difference.
  • Kya marketers sach mein human “Needs” create kar sakte hain? (The biggest myth in marketing).
  • How smart brands transform a basic Need into a high-margin Want.
  • Purchasing Power kaise ek Want ko actionable Demand mein convert karti hai.
  • Real-world examples aur ek practical exercise jisse aap kisi bhi product ke liye in teeno ko map kar sakein.

1. Needs, Wants, Demands: Step-by-Step Understanding

Marketing father Philip Kotler ne customer psychology ko samajhne ke liye customer motivation ko 3 distinct levels mein divide kiya tha. Chaliye ek-ek karke inhein detail mein samajhte hain.

A. Need (Zaroorat) — The Core Human State

Need insaan ki basic state of deprivation hoti hai. Ye physical, social ya individual level par natural human condition ka hissa hain. Agar Need poori na ho, toh person uncomfortable feel karta hai ya survive nahi kar sakta.

Needs ke kuch major categories:

  • Physical Needs: Khaana, paani, kapde, shelter, safety.
  • Social Needs: Belongingness, affection, friendship, social connection.
  • Individual Needs: Knowledge, self-expression, personal growth.

B. Want (Ichaa / Preference) — Need Shaped by Culture & Personality

Jab kisi basic Need को fulfill karne ke liye ek specific object ya service ki chahat hoti hai, toh usse Want kehte hain. Want hamare culture, society, upbringing aur individual personality se shape hoti hai.

Example: Hunger ek Need hai. Lekin:

  • Mumbai mein ek person hunger mitaane ke liye Vada Pav chahta hai.
  • South India mein wahi person Masala Dosa prefer kar sakta hai.
  • New York mein rehne vaala person Pepperoni Pizza chahega.

Hunger (Need) same thi, lekin location, culture aur context ne usse alag-alag Wants mein badal diya. Yahan par marketing ka asli role shuru hota hai — brands aapki basic need ko apni specific product ki “Want” mein mould karte hain.

C. Demand (Maang) — Want Backed by Ability & Willingness to Pay

Har koi luxury car, premium smartphone ya exotic vacation chahta hai. Lekin kya har Want market mein business generate karti hai? Nahi.

Jab ek Want ke saath Purchasing Power (Ability to Pay) aur Willingness to Spend jud jaati hai, tab woh Demand banti hai.

Demand Formula:

Demand = Want + Ability to Pay + Willingness to Spend

Agar ek student iPhone 15 Pro lene ka sapna dekhta hai, toh woh uski Want hai. Lekin jab uske paas $1,000 / ₹1,00,000 kharch karne ka budget aur mood dono hote hain, tab Apple ke liye woh Demand banti hai.

2. Comparison Table: Quick Mental Model

Dimension Need (Zaroorat) Want (Ichaa) Demand (Maang)
Definition Basic state of physical or psychological deprivation. Specific directional desire to satisfy a need. Want backed by purchasing power.
Origin Human biology, psychology & survival. Culture, personality, societal trends & marketing. Income level, financial capability & willingness.
Can Marketers Create It? NO. Already exists naturally. YES. Influenced via branding & communication. INDIRECTLY. Via pricing strategies, EMI, financing, value perception.
Example (Transport) Point A se Point B tak travel karna. Electric Car / SUV chalana. Tesla / Tata Nexon EV khareedne ka budget hona.

3. The Biggest Myth: “Marketers Create Needs”

Aapne aksar logon ko kehte suna hoga: “Aaj kal ke marketers logon ki zaroorat ke bina bhi cheezein bech dete hain, wo new needs create kar dete hain.”

As a marketer, aapko ye clear hona chahiye: This is technically false.

Chaliye ek real example dekhte hain:

Jab Apple ne iPad launch kiya tha, logon ne kaha: “Apple ne ek new need create kar di — tablet screen ki need!”

Lekin actual truth kya hai?

  • Core Need: Information access, entertainment, portable work capability, social status. (Ye needs laptop aur smartphone se pehle bhi exist karti thi).
  • What Apple did: Unhone in existing needs ko satisfy karne ke liye ek behter solution (a lightweight touch screen device) design kiya aur ek strong Want create ki.

Marketers needs create nahi karte; woh exist karti hui unexpressed ya latent needs ko discover karte hain aur unke around attractive Wants create karte hain.

4. Real-World Marketing Application: The Coffee Industry

Is concept ko real market mein samajhne ke liye coffee industry ka transformation dekhiye:

Case: Tap Water vs Instant Coffee vs Starbucks

  • Need (Hydration / Energy Boost): Insaan ko subah susti door karne ke liye caffeine ya hydration chahiye. Ye biological need hai. Cost: Free / minimal.
  • Want (Cafe Experience & Status): Customer ko ab sirf caffeine nahi chahiye; unhe ek stylish ambience, customizable oat-milk cappuccino, aur cup par apna naam likhwaana chaahiye. Starbucks ne is want ko create aur groom kiya.
  • Demand (Conversion): Starbucks ne premium pricing (~₹350 – ₹500 per cup) rakhi. Jin customers ke paas disposable income hai aur jo premium experience ke liye pay karne ko taiyaar hain, unki Want real Demand ban gayi.

Agar Starbucks sirf “Pyaas” ya “Caffeine Need” ko target karta, toh woh kabhi $100+ billion ki global brand nahi ban pata. Unhone Want aur Demand layer par focus karke market value amplify ki.

5. Think Like a Marketer: Practical Exercise

Chaliye ab thoda practical Sochte hain. Maan lijiye aap ek Fitness Smartwatch brand ke marketing lead hain.

Apne notebook ya dimaag mein in 3 questions ko answer kijiye:

  1. What is the Core Need? (e.g., Health tracking, longevity, staying fit, self-esteem).
  2. How do you turn this into a Want? (e.g., Stylish sleek watch face, step tracking gamification, celebrity endorsement, showing status).
  3. How do you unlock Demand? (e.g., Offering no-cost EMI options, festive discount pricing, clear trade-in programs for old watches).

Jab aap in teeno steps ko alignment mein laate hain, tab aapka marketing funnel smoothly work karta hai.

Rohan’s Coach Note

Beginner Marketer Mistake: Bahut se log sirf “Wants” create karne mein poora budget laga dete hain, par ye check karna bhool jaate hain ki unke target audience ke paas use khareedne ki financial capability (Demand) hai ya nahi.

Jab aap market research karein, toh humesha puchiye: “Kya log is product ko pasand kar rahe hain (Want), ya kya log iske liye wallet se paise nikalne ko taiyaar hain (Demand)?” Difference hi business ki success aur failure decide karta hai.

Quick Recall / Checkpoint

Apne learning test karne ke liye niche diye gaye questions ke baare mein sochiye (Click to expand answers):

1. Need aur Want ke beech sabse bada difference kya hai?

Need ek basic state of deprivation hai (jaise hunger ya thirst) jo human nature ka hissa hai. Want us need ko fulfill karne ki specific desire hai jo culture, society aur personal taste se shape hoti hai (jaise Pizza ya Green Tea).

2. Ek high Want hone ke bawajood woh Demand kyun nahi ban pati?

Agar customer ke paas purchasing power (ability to pay) nahi hai ya woh us price target par spend karne ke liye willing nahi hai, toh high Want hone par bhi woh actionable Demand mein convert nahi hoti.

3. Pricing and financing tools (jaise 0% EMI) marketing mein kis level par help karte hain?

Ye tools customer ki “Want” ko “Demand” mein badalne mein help karte hain by increasing affordability and willingness to buy immediately.

Key Takeaways

  • Needs are pre-existing: Human physical aur emotional needs natural hain; marketers generate nahi karte.
  • Wants are shaped by marketing: Culture, branding, and messaging transform basic needs into desire for specific products.
  • Demands drive revenue: Only Wants backed by purchasing power and willingness to pay result in sales.
  • Marketing job: Identify latent Needs → Build compelling Wants → Enable frictionless Demand.

What Comes Next?

Aaj humne customer motivation ke internal layers — Needs, Wants, aur Demands ko achhi tarah samajh liya.

Kal Day 10 mein hum marketing geography ka ek bada distinction samjhenge: B2B vs B2C Marketing. Hum dekhenge ki jab customer ek individual hota hai vs jab customer ek poori company hoti hai, toh decision-making, needs aur marketing channels kaise poori tarah badal jaate hain.

See you tomorrow on Day 10!
